Dear fellow tasters,
Thanksgiving is a holiday commonly celebrated in the United States and Canada. It’s not really an Indonesian tradition but it has recently become an addition to many Jakartan hotels and restaurants’ agenda. I have never had a proper thanksgiving dinner with the turkey and all, so when an invitation for one came to my email, I felt pretty excited about it. The invitation was from Alila Jakarta and Culina Group for a Thanksgiving Buzz dinner at the hotel’s Buzz restaurant, one week later than the real Thanksgiving day (in the States, Thanksgiving is celebrated every fourth Thursday of November).
The Thanksgiving Buzz featured a buffet menu cooked up by chef Tom Drange, executive chef of Alila Jakarta, in collaboration with guest chef Raj Abat, corporate chef of Culina Group who also leads the kitchens and catering for Alila Ubud and Alila Uluwatu. I have met chef Raj once when he helped Otel Lobby’s chef Maya Aldy for a dinner invitation, so I really looked forward to what he had to offer us.
Certainly, I was not disappointed by the Thanksgiving carvery that chef Raj had prepared. The rawon roasted turkey (yes, the turkey was rubbed with Indonesian rawon seasonings) was truly the star of the evening. It was moist, tender and so delicious that I ended up grabbing two plates. Of the turkey! The carvery also included braised turkey dark meat, cornbread stuffing, giblet gravy and cranberry sauce.
From the buffet, I quite enjoyed the salmon wellington and pumpkin soup with mint. I also grabbed a plate of smoked salmon and canapés, and a few cakes and petit fours from the dessert station. Thank you Jed Doble and Alila Jakarta for inviting me. It was a Thanksgiving feast!
Happy belated Thanksgiving!
