Dear fellow tasters,
Still from my Hong Kong get away, this post is from the Macau day-trip. After surviving the ferry ride, bracing through the throngs to get to the Ruínas de São Paulo, a disastrous Macanese lunch, casino-hopping, and more shopping, my friend and I ended at the super spacious Venetian Macao. Traversing through this massive hotel-slash-casino structure was no easy feat and by the time we reached the main lobby where the Versailles-like dome and ceilings are located, it was past dinner time and our feet were screaming from too much walking.
So, we agreed that we should just look for a nice dinner place inside the Venetian and settled for Portofino, said in the Lonely Planet guide to have a terrace as “a wonderful (and rare) spot for alfresco dining” with views of the swimming pools. Unfortunately, it was a Saturday evening and the restaurant’s main dining area and the terrace looked to be fully-booked that we only managed to get a corner table near the bar area. I didn’t really have a good look of the dining area, but our seatings were quite comfortable and the interior was stylish with soft lights and the wall of wine bottles as a focal point.
We only ordered two items from the menu, the quattro stagioni pizza and the ravioli di carne. While waiting for our orders, the waiter gave us complimentary bread and grissini which tasted quite nice. The four seasons pizza was served with mushrooms, artichokes, mixed bell peppers and black olives toppings. For something vegetarian, the pizza was very delicious, with thin crispy crust and delectable toppings. As for the ravioli, it appeared more like tortellini or Chinese dumplings but had an elegant and balanced taste, from the slow braised beef filling, the mushrooms, and the rich demi glace sauce.
Overall, the food was much enjoyable. One more thing to mention is the excellent service. Our male server was very attentive and helpful. Although with far from perfect English, he was probably the nicest person we had met in our Hong Kong trip.
Buon appetito!
