Paulaner Bräuhaus

lager and oktoberfest beer @ paulaner bräuhaus

Dear fellow tasters,

Imported straight from München, complete with the Lederhosen and Dirndl worn by the waiters and waitresses, this German brewhouse and eatery has become one of Jakartan favorite destination for just a hangout and beer drinking, or a satisfying bratwurst and schnitzel meal.  Located on the ground floor of Grand Indonesia East Mall and managed by Hotel Indonesia Kempinski, Paulaner Bräuhaus boasts their beer which is brewed fresh on site (you can actually see the brewery inside the restaurant) and a selection of authentic Bavarian menu, such as butchery specials, boiled and grilled sausages, and escalopes.

I’ve been to this place several times, once only for the refreshing lager and the rest for lunches and afternoon munch but the beer is surely reason enough to come and visit Paulaner.  Albeit not much of a beer lover, I actually loved the golden lager and even the dark one.  The lager tasted very smooth and pleasant while the dark beer was also delightful with just a slight hint of bitterness – both left a nice and pleasing aftertaste.

The food menu was also delectable with more than 50% choices consist of pork.  A favorite and also their homemade butchery specialty is the ‘Paulaner Brauhausplatt’ (perfect for two or even three people if they’re light eater), a huge plate of smoked pork chop, boiled pork knuckle, three different types of sausages, meatloaf, and crispy pork knuckle served with sauerkraut and mashed potato.  My favorite from the plate would be the crispy pork knuckle which is simply crispy, tasty, and delicious.  The sausages were also pretty enjoyable but the least favorite would be the boiled pork knuckle which I think was a bit too bland.  Other menu items such as the Vienna sausages with German potato salad and the pork escalope “Hunter Style” with creamy mushroom and pan fried potatoes were also quite yummy and totally enjoyable.

The taster’s notes:
Favorite dish – the crispy pork knuckle
What to order next time – a friend mentioned the Cordon Blue is a must try, might also try different sausage and other menu from appetizer and dessert selection
Food rating – 3 star
Price rating – $$$ (I give this rating because hotel service charge plus tax applies, also other drinks besides beer are quite pricey)
Ambiance rating – 3 star
Service rating – 2 star
