Tim Ho Wan

tim ho wan's famous cha siu bao

Dear fellow tasters,

On the third day in Hong Kong, my friend suggested that we tried a one Michelin-starred dim sum place, called Tim Ho Wan.  Wow, of course I was thrilled and curious about it.  I suppose this would be my first time going to a Michelin-starred restaurant.  So, using google map to traverse the streets of Mong Kok, we managed to find the restaurant, simply by noticing the queue forming outside the shop.

Putien

putien heng hwa cuisines

Dear fellow tasters,

I used to pass through Sawah Besar street, or nowadays known as Sukarjo Wiryopranoto, during my commute from work and I couldn’t help but noticing a certain restaurant always packed with cars parking at the front.  Through word of mouth and googling, I found out that the restaurant is called Putien and it serves up Heng Hwa cuisines, a lesser-known variant of Chinese food, but definitely not the least delicious. The restaurant chain comes from Singapore whereas the Jakarta branch is the only branch in Indonesia.

Katsusei

delicious cutlet katsusei

Dear fellow tasters,

If you think Hoka Hoka Bento katsu is the best you ever had, you might want to try this restaurant and experience the ultimate katsu indulgence.  Katsusei, suitably tag-lined ‘delicious cutlet’, offers a menu of Japanese-style breaded then deep-fried cutlets (famously known as katsu) made of pork, beef, chicken and seafood.  The price tag may just be a tad on the expensive side, so when they have a 50% off credit card promo I decided to splurge on a scrumptious katsu lunch.

Paradise Dynasty Food Tasting

paradise dynasty

Dear fellow tasters,

Last Sunday, I was acting as a plus-one for a friend, Sinta Lucia, who was getting an invitation to a food tasting event organized by goorme.com at a newly-opened casual dining Chinese restaurant at one of Jakarta’s premium shopping mall, Plaza Senayan.  The restaurant is called Paradise Dynasty and located at level P5, just across from the cinema, right in the neighborhood of high-end restaurants, bars, and clubs such as Marché, Oyster, Avorio, X2, Rustique, Sushi Sei, and many more.   Continue reading

Bakmi Aboen

bakmi lebar spesial aboen (special wide noodle)

Dear fellow tasters,

This noodle shop might be stuck in a small alley somewhere in Pasar Baru shopping area, but for a taste of good-old ‘bakmi’ (Chinese noodle, usually with chicken or pork), it’s definitely the place to go.  Bakmi Aboen might not be a restaurant in a five star hotel or a noodle joint in a nice shopping mall, but I will definitely keep coming back there just for the ‘bakmi spesial’ (special noodle).   Continue reading

Paulaner Bräuhaus

lager and oktoberfest beer @ paulaner bräuhaus

Dear fellow tasters,

Imported straight from München, complete with the Lederhosen and Dirndl worn by the waiters and waitresses, this German brewhouse and eatery has become one of Jakartan favorite destination for just a hangout and beer drinking, or a satisfying bratwurst and schnitzel meal.  Located on the ground floor of Grand Indonesia East Mall and managed by Hotel Indonesia Kempinski, Paulaner Bräuhaus boasts their beer which is brewed fresh on site (you can actually see the brewery inside the restaurant) and a selection of authentic Bavarian menu, such as butchery specials, boiled and grilled sausages, and escalopes.

Tony Roma’s

star-studded sampler @ tony roma's

Dear fellow tasters,

I’d say there’s probably no place better for baby back ribs than Tony Roma’s.  This famous restaurant chain has existed like forever in Jakarta but it still remains faithful to its ‘famous for ribs’ slogan.  That afternoon, my friends and I went to the Panin Centre restaurant and here’s what we initially ordered: the appetizer sampler, the star-studded sampler and some mocktails.  Complimentary bread and butter were served while we waited for our food.

Goemon

unatama don and curry udon @ goemon

Dear fellow tasters,

Lunch menu for today was Goemon with the ladies from my former workplace.  I used to work at Wisma Kyoei Prince and Goemon on the third floor is definitely a place to go if we feel bored with takeaways and fancy something nice for lunch.  This Japanese restaurant is usually jam packed during lunch hours with Japanese expatriates who works in the building, so when you go there you feel like being transported to a Tokyo restaurant complete with NHK channel on the big screen and people chatting in incomprehensible Japanese (at least for me who doesn’t understand).
