Bebek Kaleyo

assorted duck @ bebek kaleyo

Dear fellow tasters,

Delicious duck doesn’t have to come in a plate of duck confit or Peking duck and for the price of one portion of duck confit in a fancy French restaurant, it will feed two to three people in this place, rice and drink included.  Of course, the comparison is well unbalanced but for a taste of duck with traditional Indonesian flavor, Bebek Kaleyo might just be the perfect destination.

Sroto Eling-eling

sroto eling-eling

Dear fellow tasters,

Stepping away from fancy restaurants and mall dining, it can be quite rewarding to go out and try diverse Indonesian cuisines served in humble and affordable yet unique eateries.  This post is about one of those places, offering what’s considered a common Indonesian beef/chicken soup dish mostly known as ‘soto’ but with a twist.  No, this one’s not called ‘soto’, but ‘sroto’.  It originates from Sokaraja – Banyumas, Central Java and one place to enjoy ‘sroto’ in Jakarta is located in Tebet area, titled Sroto Eling-eling (‘eling-eling’ literally means remember-remember).

Waroeng Kampoeng

nasi liwet @ waroeng kampoeng

Dear fellow tasters,

It was lunch date with two lady friends at Citywalk Sudirman.  We initially planned for Nanny’s Pavillon but the waiting list was crazy, so we looked for a different place and ended up at an Indonesian food restaurant called Waroeng Kampoeng which was looking a bit crowded as well.  Waroeng means food stall and Kampoeng means village/rural and their menu selection was traditional Indonesian with a great Javanese influence.  I decided to order the nasi liwet while my friends chose the sour spicy fish soup and nasi rawon.

Lara Djonggrang

demak brongkos rice @ lara djonggrang

Dear fellow tasters,

Having some wonderful friends who just love to dine out and try out new culinary adventure can be considered a real blessing, especially for me, who literally ‘lives to eat’ *grin*. I happen to have those kind of friends, two of them from college, now a married couple, who often ask me to join them for lunch and dinner, and I rarely say no. There we were, pulling into the parking area for Lara Djonggrang — the name taken from a famous Javanese legend femme fatale, with exterior adorned by old stone carvings like you can find in Prambanan temple and willowy tree branches shading us from the intense Jakartan sun.
