Dear fellow tasters,

This is one long overdue post because it happened months ago but I still want to write about it due to its special nature.  No, I’m not writing about a fancy restaurant or a street hawker place but a market.  And it was a traditional market too, certainly not your clean and orderly supermarket or hypermarket.  After several back and forth replies and mentions on twitter, I joined with some food bloggers and other foodies from the JalanSutra community to explore a North Jakartan traditional market, namely Pasar Muara Karang or Muara Karang Market.  The mission: to fill our bellies with delicious market food.

Bebek Kaleyo

Dear fellow tasters,

Delicious duck doesn’t have to come in a plate of duck confit or Peking duck and for the price of one portion of duck confit in a fancy French restaurant, it will feed two to three people in this place, rice and drink included.  Of course, the comparison is well unbalanced but for a taste of duck with traditional Indonesian flavor, Bebek Kaleyo might just be the perfect destination.

Sroto Eling-eling

Dear fellow tasters,

Stepping away from fancy restaurants and mall dining, it can be quite rewarding to go out and try diverse Indonesian cuisines served in humble and affordable yet unique eateries.  This post is about one of those places, offering what’s considered a common Indonesian beef/chicken soup dish mostly known as ‘soto’ but with a twist.  No, this one’s not called ‘soto’, but ‘sroto’.  It originates from Sokaraja – Banyumas, Central Java and one place to enjoy ‘sroto’ in Jakarta is located in Tebet area, titled Sroto Eling-eling (‘eling-eling’ literally means remember-remember).

Oh wow, just noticed that this blog got 10,000 hits already.  Thank you for reading my blabbers on food and eating places, lovely tasters.  It turned out I still got one more picture from my late gemini and I decided to write a quick post on it because the food here is great, and better yet, super cheap.  Pempek (some kind of fish cake) is a well-known Indonesian delicacy originating from Palembang, South Sumatra.  Continue reading
